Mardi/Tuesday 16.07.2019. Wick of Gruting. Fetlar island
Mardi 16 juillet 2019
nuit.

We go to the museum to the left, about 2 km, well
equipped with rain gear, it's raining. It's interesting; it shows old things
from the past, how people used to live and several stories of shipwreck. We
have a coffee and two pieces of good cakes, and I buy two postcards for Theo
and Kian, but they have no stamps. The lady tells us the shop where you can buy
them is at 5.5 miles from here. So we
leave, in the rain. We ride, and ride, 5.5 miles, it's long and we arrive at
Aywick Shop. And what a shop! It's amazing all they have in this shop. It is a
large shed divided into several rooms and I get lost. We buy our two stamps and
several things, including a piece of local salted piece of mutton, since we are
here. I write the cards and we post them in a mailbox even more in the middle
of nowhere. Return to the boat after 22 km, lunch and departure more to the
north. Calm, rainy weather. Jens puts the salted mutton to cook on the stove en
route, and it smells like pinnekjøtt throughout the boat! (Pinnekjøtt is the
dried sheep ribs that West Norwegians eat at Christmas). He has to change the
water twice or it's too salty. We are going to anchor in Wick of Grutingy,
north of Fetlar Island, a beautiful open bay protected from the southeast wind
that we have now. We don’t go ashore, Jens prepares the piece of mutton with
potatoes and carrots and I make the blog. Our only companions are the many
seabirds that nest in the cliffs. In the evening, a thick fog descends on the
bay and it is spooky, the cries of the birds, the darkness and the fog, but we
are well anchored, the weather is calm and all is well. Maja rolls a little
with the small swell that enters the bay and we set everything in place for the
night.
