Vendredi 19 juillet 2019
semblent connaitre, Linsey me dit qu’elles sont enseignées à l’école. Tous
dansent, enfants, jeunes, vieux et très vieux. C’est très sympa. Quelle chance
scandinave.

Very nice day, sunny, but very windy too. The bride
and groom are lucky ... but are going to be cold. We ride north following the
coast. Beautiful landscapes, blue sea and green meadows. We arrive almost where
the Bluemell Sound (the fjord which separates the island of Yell and the island
of Unst) opens unto the North Sea. It is a place known for its strong currents.
It was through this fjord that we left the Shetland to go to the Faroe Islands,
on Maja of course, in July 2011 (at a time of weak current). At Gloup, at the
end of the peninsula, we follow an arrow which indicates a monument on a small
promontory. This monument is erected in memory of the 58 fishermen, on several
boats, who died at sea on July 20, 1881, during a strong storm. For a small
community, the shock was terrible. The statue represents a woman carrying a
child who scans the horizon and is waiting ... very moving. We come back
against the wind and it's a good exercise. We arrive exactly at 1:30 pm at the church,
the wedding time. The priest is outside and is waiting. The bride arrives with
her bridesmaids and her father (in kilt) a little late, the groom and the
guests are already inside the church. We go back to lunch on the boat. From
there we have a direct view of the church and I keep an eye there. When the
whole wedding starts on foot towards the Town Hall where the reception is held,
I take a picture from Maja. The wind is strong and cold, the bride and
bridesmaids must be freezing, the poor ones. We stay on Maja in the afternoon,
I have two blogs to catch up, Wednesday and Thursday. Jens looks at the weather
forecast, we had thought of leaving tomorrow for Norway, but the weather is
bad, wind strong enough and waves from the southeast, so ¾ against us. We stay here waiting for better
weather. Simple dinner at the boat and at 8 pm, after dressing up (it's limited, we don't have party clothes here, but I put on earrings!), We ride
at the wedding party. Linsey spoke about to us to the the groom's father and he
invited us. The Town Hall is packed, several hundred people are there. We are
offered a drink, and even several, and soon the dance begins. They are Scottish
dances, like quadrilles, with well-defined rules that everyone seems to know,
Linsey tells me they are taught at school. All are dancing, children, young,
old and very old. It's very nice. How lucky we are to be here just on the day of this
wedding, the last wedding took place three years ago. We stay a little and then
go back to Maja. A guy outside is trying Jens's bike ... and almost fell. He
doesn’t know the Scandinavian system of braking by pedaling back.
